On June 28th, 2013 the Roger Langeliers Construction Company, an Approved Applicator of Bridge Preservation LLC. installed the first ever Articulus™ Spray Applied Highway Expansion Joint for a highway bridge deck. 150 linear feet of the Bridge Preservation™ Expansion Joint was installed on the Oregon DOT McNamee Road Bridge (#01740) in Multnomah County, Oregon. The Articulus™ Expansion Joint chemically bonds with the Bridge Preservation™ waterproofing system to form a seamless, monolithic waterproofing membrane on both the bridge deck and across the joint. Because the Spray Applied Highway Expansion Joint and Waterproofing System are compatible materials, Bridge Preservation LLC. offers a single warranty that covers both the performance of the waterproofing membrane as well as the expansion joint.
Shot blasting began at 7:00 PM to prepare the deck for application of the Bridge Preservation™ Concrete Primer. There was a 3”x150’ longitudinal joint located in the center of the bridge deck, and approximately 15 minutes after the primer application, Bridge Preservation™ BDM was installed 3’ on either side of the joint to allow the spray applied highway expansion joint and waterproofing installations to take place simultaneously.
The Articulus™ Expansion Joint was sprayed into place and 80 mils of BDM was applied. On one 14‘x150’ section of the structure Bridge Preservation™ Aggregated Top Coat was installed, which provides a slip resistant surface and accommodates normal vehicular traffic within one hour of the installation. This allowed traffic to be moved to the other side of the bridge so the remainder of the waterproofing installation could be completed prior to placement of the asphalt wear course.
The installation was completed at 2:00 AM. The Roger Langeliers Construction Company was able to complete the surface preparation, install 11,000 SF of Bridge Preservation™ BDM, and 150 LF of Spray Applied Highway Expansion Joint in only 7 hours. This extremely fast installation allowed the application of the asphalt wear course and the reopening of the bridge all during the same night.
